About Gary Fey
"Batik painting on silk is my spiritual practice. My creative service in life."

Gary Fey's formal art education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC)
drove him to explore and create works of art that elevate this magnificent art form,
batik to it's highest state.
COLOR, is the reason Gary Fey uses the technique of batik. Dyed silk gives
intense saturated color, which he seeks. It's well known the human eye responds to
color increasing Chi (energy) in the body and having healing effects upon all the
systems and functions of the body-mind-spirit. For instance, the color magenta will
balance every biological function in the body promoting harmony within.
Gary Fey Lives, in the land of enchantment, between Santa Fe and Taos at 2214
Taos Hwy 68, Embudo New Mexico, 505-579-9696. He has been dyeing on silk for
30 years. He was the second male assistant in the textile department at SAIC-a
field dominated by women. He specialized in BATIK after completing his formal art
education. Later moving to San Diego CA he developed his batik process, inspired
by stunning ocean views. His first sale, $5000 in 1983, occurred at a Haute
Couture Boutique called Cappriccios (La Jolla CA & Scottsdale AZ) .
Gary Fey's commercial career continued by selling hand painted batik yardage for
fashion giants like Oscar de la Renta and Bill Blass. Linda Evans wore his batik
painted silks on the TV show Dynasty-garments designed by Nolan Miller. Gary
Fey later became a design studio and sold batik textile designs in NYC and LA,
traveling to sell his collections five times a year.
Gary Fey's fine art background was eventually reclaimed in the late 1980's when
he began to create museum quality batik paintings on silk. In 1996 Gary Fey began
using Jacquard Silk.
Jacquard Silk has a woven pattern of satin (shiny) and Crepe de Chine (matte).
The Jacquard silk creates a hologram-like flicker in Gary Fey's batik paintings as a
viewer walks past the art! There are currently 14 + jacquard patterns in his
collection.
BATIK is a process using dye on fabric (Gary Fey exclusively uses silk) and hot
wax as a resist. The wax is heated to 300 degrees and drawn on the silk with
tjuanting tools made of copper. Each original painting takes 7 to 10, and up to 21
days of dyeing and waxing. Washing and drying occurs each day before re-waxing
and re-dyeing. Dry cleaning removes the wax, liberating the painting to a luminous
shine. Batik began 2000 years ago on the island of Java in Indonesia. Today much
of what people think of as batik, comes out of Bali and is often in the form of cotton
dyed fabric used for clothing.
ORIGINAL ART, Gary Fey acknowledges, created by the artists hand has a
powerful vibrational influence for the viewer. That said, a small number of
LIMITED EDITION PRINTS are available on this site. The prints are commercially
reproduced on acid free paper with permanent color inks. Prints are 8" X 10" by
request of collectors who want smaller images for their walls, due to years of art
collecting.
